‘Additional attribute’ is the term used to describe the supplementary properties a firestop product possesses other than fire resistance. There are multiple such attributes, including:
• Water resistance: a firestop product’s ability to withstand short-term exposure to water in case of accidents, i.e. activated sprinklers or broken water pipes
• Seismic/movement control: to accommodate or absorb small movements caused by building movement in order to maintain firestopping properties even if pipes and cables move
• Air/gas tightness: to resist free flow of air or gas through the firestopping product in order to maintain thermal insulation e.g. to keep fire extinguishing gases in the room where the fire started
• Electrical resistance: to resist transfer of electric current through the product if there is a damaged cable in the insulation
• Mold and mildew: resistance to mold or mildew formation that can attack and compromise firestop products
• Acoustic insulation: the product does not allow sound transfer from one room to another above certain dB

Passive fire protection solutions may require additional attributes other than fire resistance. For instance:
1. Buildings in earthquake zones need products with seismic control.
2. Buildings prone to movement from wind and other loads need products with movement resistance.
3. Hotels and residential buildings required solutions with acoustic resistance.
4. For datacenters, air tightness is important to allow gas extinguishers, energy control and thermal insulation to function correctly.
5. For hospitals, airflow control or air tightness is important for virus control.
